Bullock cart race to resume in the state: Sunil Kedar

New Delhi 14: Bullock cart race is a favorite subject of farmers in the state. Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Sunil Kedar said that the state government is committed to resume this race.
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court to start bullock cart races in the state. Kedar was in Delhi today for a detailed discussion with senior advocates and state government lawyers regarding the bullock cart race. This time he gave this information. Maharashtra had passed a law in 2017 to start bullock cart racing. However, it was stayed by the Mumbai High Court. Subsequently, the government had filed a petition in the Supreme Court following the order. The case is pending before an extended bench and a decision is likely to be taken by the Supreme Court next week. Kedar said that discussions have been held with the advocates present on behalf of the Government of Maharashtra for a detailed discussion in this regard.
Other states in the country like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh still have bullock cart races. However, due to the stay of the Mumbai High Court, races have been banned in Maharashtra. He underlined that he was in Delhi to lift the ban and resume bullock cart races in the state.
The state government has been pursuing the matter and has sought an interim order from the apex court. He informed that the Government of Maharashtra has appointed Adv. Mukul Rohatgi, Adv. Shekhar Napde and Adv. Sachin Patil as Senior Advocates.
Maharashtra has a tradition of bullock cart racing which is more than 400 years old. "Bullock cart race" is an important part of Maharashtra's culture. Farmers use special Khillar bulls for racing and keep them. Khillar is a breed of bulls found only in Maharashtra. Demand for this specialty has grown significantly as a result of recent corporate scandals. Kedar also demanded that the bullock cart should be considered as a cultural part of the life of the farmers.
