Confusion over Congress-VBA alliance in Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections: Ambedkar issues a stern warning
Mumbai: The decision regarding the alliance between the Congress and the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation election battle is likely to be made tomorrow, Friday. However, tension has escalated between the two parties over the issue of seat sharing, and VBA leader Prakash Ambedkar has given a blunt ultimatum to the Congress. While the VBA has demanded 43 seats, the Congress is only prepared to offer 7. This deadlock has sparked discussions in political circles about what the outcome of the election will be.
The Congress is preparing to contest the election for the 227 seats of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation on its own. However, after recently forming an alliance with Mahadev Jankar's Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP), efforts are now underway to bring the VBA on board. For this purpose, the Congress has appointed a committee of three leaders, and discussions on seat sharing have been ongoing since last week. With the last date for filing nomination papers being December 30, there is a shortage of time.
The VBA has received a flood of applications from 670 prospective candidates from 212 wards. There are approximately 8.5 lakh Scheduled Caste voters in Mumbai, and 15 wards are reserved. Including Buddhist and other backward class voters, the total number reaches up to 16 lakhs. The VBA claims to have elected more than 70 corporators across the state in the recently held municipal council and nagar panchayat elections. The 'Constitution Honour' rallies organized in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Pimpri-Chinchwad in the last few months have received a tremendous response, and the party has strengthened its base among Scheduled Castes, as well as other backward classes, nomadic tribes, and minorities.
Congress state president Harshvardhan Sapkal has taken an optimistic stance regarding the alliance, stating, "Discussions are underway to include the VBA, and a decision will be made soon." However, Prakash Ambedkar has given a clear warning, stating, "We have given a proposal for an alliance to the Congress in Mumbai. The ball is now in their court. If an alliance does not happen, the VBA is ready to contest 200 seats. And Congress will have an experience similar to that of the Shiv Sena." Ambedkar issued this warning to the Congress, referring to the experience of the Uddhav Thackeray group in the last assembly elections.
According to political analysts, given the VBA's strong hold in Mumbai, the Congress will have to form an alliance. Otherwise, Ambedkar's allegations could prove costly for the Congress. Everyone is watching to see whether this deadlock will be resolved in the run-up to the elections.
