Don't be afraid of 'HMPV' virus - Vijayalakshmi Bidri

Nagpur, Date 7: Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a common virus that causes upper respiratory tract infections. Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidri has appealed to strictly follow the instructions given by the Health Department to prevent this infection. She has also asked citizens not to be unnecessarily afraid in this regard.
This is a seasonal disease and occurs in the winter and early summer like RSV and flu. Currently, there are reports that there has been an increase in the number of patients of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China. This disease is a major cause of acute respiratory infections. This virus was first detected in the Netherlands in 2001.
As part of the precautionary measures, the Public Health Department has issued instructions on what citizens should and should not do to prevent respiratory infections. He has also appealed to the citizens of Nagpur division to follow it.
Citizens should not panic and take care if they experience symptoms like cough, fever, sore throat, runny nose, difficulty breathing.
Do this:-
• Cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue paper when you cough or sneeze.
• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or sanitizer.
• Stay away from public places if you have fever, cough or sneeze.
• Drink plenty of water and eat nutritious food.
* Ensure adequate ventilation in all places to reduce infection.
Don't do this:-
* Do not shake hands.
• Do not reuse tissue paper and handkerchiefs.
* Do not have close contact with sick people.
• Do not touch your eyes, nose and mouth frequently.
• Do not spit in public places.
* Do not seek treatment without consulting a doctor.
The Health Department is conducting a survey regarding all patients suffering from cold and cough, i.e. ILI, and such patients should immediately seek medical treatment as per medical advice. The Divisional Commissioner has also appealed to take necessary precautions without panicking about the disease HMPV.
