Drought Severity Intensifies in the State! Drought Declared in 40 More Talukas; Total Count Reaches 305; Chief Minister Announces ?5,000 Aid Before Diwali
Mumbai / Nagpur: Concerns regarding the drought situation in the state have deepened. While drought had previously been declared in 265 talukas, it has now been announced in another 40, bringing the total number of drought-affected talukas to 305.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared this information following a cabinet meeting held today. The drought situation has worsened due to reduced rainfall caused by the El Niño effect, significant crop damage in many areas, and an acute water shortage.
Fadnavis stated, "Initially, drought was declared in 265 talukas. Subsequently, complaints were received from some other talukas. After reviewing the 'Trigger 1' and 'Trigger 2' criteria, drought has been declared in a total of 305 talukas; 40 additional talukas have been added to the previous 265."
The government has decided to provide 12 types of relief measures for drought-affected farmers. The Chief Minister noted that, historically, drought is usually declared in November and aid distributed in December; however, given the current circumstances, the drought was declared in October itself, and a supplementary Government Resolution (GR) has been issued.
With Diwali approaching, farmers are facing a difficult period. Therefore, following discussions with the cabinet, it was decided to provide an advance payment of ?5,000 to drought-affected farmers before the festival. The Chief Minister also clarified that loan waiver funds are simultaneously being credited to farmers' accounts.
This decision is expected to provide immediate relief to farmers grappling with the drought crisis.
