Farmers' revolt in Nagpur

Farmers' revolt in Nagpur: Ignoring court orders, a firm fight for demands, opposition that defies police and Bachchu Kadu's volcanic eruption
Tuesday, October 29, 2025:Nagpur, Date 28: The ongoing agitation in Nagpur city against the agricultural policies that have become like licking salt on the wounds of the farming community in Maharashtra has now taken a different form. Even after the clear order of the High Court, the farmers are adamant on their demands. The farmers who took to the roads created obstacles to send the police back, while BJP MLA Bachchu Kadu participated in the agitation and reacted angrily. The agitation has brought the traffic system in the city to a standstill, and the farmer leaders claim that 'this agitation will not be stopped until the demands are met.' The protesters believe that this agitation will not be limited to Nagpur alone, but will inspire farmers across Vidarbha.
Background of the protest: Explosion of old wounds of farmers
The protest, which was started by farmers in Nagpur district last week, was started over complaints that the state government's agricultural laws were reducing farmers' income. In particular, the farmers are in trouble due to the lack of minimum support price (MSP) for cotton and soybean farmers and the rising prices of seeds and fertilizers. The farmers' organization leader said, "We have been sweating in the fields for years, but we are not getting any results. This protest is to get justice for our demands that the government should guarantee MSP, announce loan waivers and increase subsidies for agriculture."
The High Court had given an interim verdict on the protest on August 2, 2024 and ordered to clear the roads and protest peacefully. However, the farmers deliberately ignored this order. "The court's order is important, but does no one think about the hunger of our farmers? We will go to court and present our demands, but we will not stop the protest," a farmer leader expressed his determination. Against this backdrop, the agitation has intensified, and a large gathering of farmers was held at a major intersection in Nagpur this afternoon.
Protests that defy police: City paralyzed, traffic disrupted
On the second day of the agitation, the police deployed a large number of forces. The Nagpur City Police Commissionerate took the help of more than 500 police personnel and the Anti-Riot Squad (RAF). The farmers created obstacles on the national highway with tractors and agricultural implements, which completely stopped traffic on the Nagpur-Mumbai highway. The police tried to use lathis and water cannons to disperse the protesters, but the farmers resisted in unison.
"Police brothers, you are also the sons of farmers. Fight for our demands, not against us," the farmers shouted slogans and drove them away by surrounding the police vehicles. Two farmers were injured in the stampede, while five policemen suffered minor injuries. A drone video shows farmers holding Tulsi leaves and traditional farming tools in their hands blocking the police line. The city's traffic system was disrupted, leaving many commuters stranded, and local traders also showed their support for the protesters. "Even if the city stops, the farmers' fight will not stop," was the slogan chanted by the protesters.
Nagpur Police Commissioner Santosh Kulkarni told the media, "We are ready to protest peacefully, but it is our duty to protect the law. The High Court's order will be followed." However, the administration's concerns have increased as the protesters evaded the police's efforts. The protest continued peacefully till evening, but tensions flared up again late at night.
Bachchu Kadu's volcanic eruption: 'Farmers are God, who will go against them?'
The participation of BJP MLA Bachchu Kadu in this protest became the most talked about topic. Kadu is known as an influential leader in Vidarbha, and he has close ties with the farming community. This afternoon, he reached the protest site and stood with the farmers. He said in an angry speech, "Farmers are God. They give us food by pouring their sweat drop by drop, and they do not get justice? There is a High Court order, but who will order the hunger strike of the farmers? I am with the farmers, and I will participate in the protest until the demands are met."
Kadu's response has created a stir in political circles. Some BJP leaders praised his stand, while Congress and NCP leaders tried to take advantage of it. "Bachhu Kadu's stand has given new strength to the farmers. This protest will now take on a political color," said a political analyst. Kadu further said, "The government should immediately communicate with the farmers. Otherwise, this protest will spread throughout Maharashtra."
Farmers' firm stance: 'No retreat until demands are met'
Women also make up a large share of the thousands of farmers who participated in the protest. A woman farmer said, "We work in the fields, but we have to take loans even to feed our children. How will we survive if we don't get the MSP guarantee?" The head of the farmers' organization said, "A court order cannot bind us. We are protesting peacefully, but we will not leave the streets until our demands are met."
