Major Boost for Mumbai Locals! ?18,000 Crore Projects to Raise Trips to 3,500; New Platform at Dadar
Extensive expansion and modernization work is underway for the Mumbai suburban railway network. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw provided detailed information regarding these initiatives. Projects worth approximately ?18,000 crore are currently in progress, with the goal of increasing the number of local train trips in Mumbai to 3,500 by 2030.
Currently, around 3,200 local trains operate daily in Mumbai. An increase in this number will bring significant relief to commuters. Additionally, 238 air-conditioned (AC) local trains will be introduced for passenger service by 2030. The first AC local is expected to be available in 2027, with the remaining trains delivered by 2030. The Railway Board has placed production orders with the Modern Coach Factory and the Rail Coach Factory for these trains.
Key Projects:
Construction of an additional new platform at Dadar station.
Five new platforms and two pit lines at Jogeshwari.
Six platforms, three pit lines, and five stabling lines in the Vasai Road area.
Four new platforms and two pit lines at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT).
Expansion of 12-coach platforms to accommodate 15-coach trains at several stations.
To manage the passenger rush during the Ganeshotsav festival, 350 special trains are being operated this year. Preparations are in place to increase this number to 370 if the need arises.
