Murder of IB Officer Ankit Sharma during 2020 Delhi Riots: Tahir Hussain convicted of murder, abduction, and inciting riots
New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday (July 13, 2026) convicted former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councilor Tahir Hussain and four others in the case regarding the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) official Ankit Sharma during the 2020 North-East Delhi riots.
Additional Sessions Judge Pulastya Pramachala delivered the verdict at the Karkardooma Court. Tahir Hussain was convicted under Sections 188, 153A, 147, 148, 149, 365, and 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, he was acquitted of charges under Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) and Section 129.
The court also convicted four other accused—Javed, Anas, Nazim, and Qasim—in connection with Ankit Sharma's murder. The remaining six accused were acquitted.
Background of the case:
This incident is linked to the 2020 Delhi riots. Ankit Sharma had stepped out of his home to purchase groceries and other household items but did not return. His body was found in a drain near Chand Bagh Puliya. According to the post-mortem report, there were 51 injuries on his body, inflicted using sharp-edged weapons and blunt objects.
Based on the complaint filed by Ankit's father, it was alleged that Tahir Hussain and his associates were responsible for the murder. The case was registered as FIR 65/2020 at Dayalpur Police Station.
In March 2023, the court had framed charges against Tahir Hussain and the other accused. While most of the accused were granted bail, the High Court had rejected Tahir Hussain's bail plea.
Note: A subsequent hearing will be held to announce the sentencing. This verdict marks a significant development in the cases related to the 2020 Delhi riots.
