Number of unauthorized schools in Pune district drops from 53 to 30; questions raised over Education Department's data
Pune: Parents choose schools hoping to provide their children with a good education. However, they often lack sufficient information regarding whether a particular school is authorized or unauthorized. Information obtained via the Right to Information (RTI) Act a few days ago had revealed the existence of 53 unauthorized schools in Pune district. Subsequent verification by the Education Department has now clarified that only 30 schools are actually unauthorized. This discrepancy has raised questions about the reliability of the Education Department's statistics on unauthorized schools.
According to Dr. Ganpat More, the Divisional Deputy Director for the Pune Division, there are currently 30 unauthorized schools in total: 12 in the Pune Municipal Corporation area, 9 in Pune rural areas, and 9 in Pimpri-Chinchwad. These revised figures emerged after the Education Department verified the initial list of 53 schools identified through RTI.
During the verification process, it was found that five schools on the list had relocated, while three had shut down. Consequently, the department determined it was inappropriate to include these eight schools in the current list of unauthorized schools. The Education Department stated that the list would be updated by removing the names of the relocated and closed schools.
Action is being initiated in accordance with regulations against institutions that have started schools and admitted students without obtaining the necessary permissions. Dr. More stated that necessary measures would be implemented in the future to curb such unauthorized schools. He also urged school administrators to strictly adhere to Education Department regulations when establishing schools.
