Opposition unites in Jalgaon Municipal Corporation elections; strategizing to deliver a blow to the BJP

Jalgaon, December 26, 2025 - A grand alliance of opposition parties is forming to challenge the BJP's absolute power in the municipal corporation elections. Eknath Shinde faction's Shiv Sena, Ajit Pawar faction's Nationalist Congress Party, Uddhav Thackeray faction's Shiv Sena, Sharad Pawar faction's NCP, Congress, and MIM are coming together and preparing to fight against the BJP, following the 'Kankavli pattern'. This strategy is being finalized through confidential meetings held in Jalgaon over the past four days and discussions with state-level leaders in Mumbai.
In the last municipal election, the BJP won 57 seats single-handedly and came to power. However, discontent has grown within the ruling Mahayuti alliance due to the perceived secondary treatment of alliance partners Shinde Sena and Ajit Pawar's NCP. A dispute arose over seat allocation in a recent Mahayuti meeting. The BJP reportedly reserved 55 seats for itself, while discussing giving 17 seats to the Shinde Sena and only 3 to the NCP. However, the exclusion of the Ajit Pawar group from the meeting further fueled resentment. Although MLA Mangesh Chavan proposed giving 26 seats to the NCP, the proposal was rejected.
Against this backdrop, the Shinde Sena and Ajit Pawar's NCP are now joining hands with Uddhav Sena, Sharad Pawar's NCP, and Congress. This new alliance plans to field candidates from the families of the respective party leaders. Symbols such as 'clock' or 'flute' for Uddhav Sena and 'torch' or 'bow and arrow' for NCP will be used. There is also a possibility of including former BJP-supported corporators in this alliance.
Political circles suggest that an official announcement of this alliance will be made in the next two days. Since the BJP has a large number of potential candidates, there is a fear that their loyal workers might be sidelined. This alliance is expected to create a significant challenge to the BJP's power. Just as the opposition parties in Kankavli formed a city development alliance to stop the BJP, it remains to be seen after the elections whether this experiment will be successful in Jalgaon as well.
