Stray dog ??menace rises in Nagpur; Former Mayor Sandip Joshi questions NMC administration – "Are you waiting for a tragic incident to occur?"
Nagpur: A wave of outrage has swept across Maharashtra following a horrific attack by seven stray dogs on a four-year-old girl in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Against this backdrop, the issue of stray dogs in Nagpur has once again come to the forefront. Former BJP MLC and former Mayor of Nagpur, Sandip Joshi, has directly questioned the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) administration: "Are you waiting for a similar serious incident to happen in Nagpur, just like in Pimpri-Chinchwad?"
The fact that a former legislator from the ruling BJP has questioned the administration's functioning while his own party holds power in the NMC has sparked a debate. Joshi stated on social media that despite clear directives from the High Court, the NMC's implementation of preventive measures has been sluggish. He emphasized the need to take concrete steps immediately to prevent such incidents from occurring, rather than reacting after a tragedy has already taken place.
Packs of stray dogs chasing people and causing distress to citizens have become a daily occurrence in many parts of Nagpur. A sense of fear prevails, particularly among small children, senior citizens, and two-wheeler riders. A similar attack on a young girl had previously occurred in the Sonegaon area. Citizens allege that while the NMC claims to be carrying out sterilization and other measures, the reality on the streets tells a different story.
As a former Mayor, Joshi possesses firsthand experience regarding the NMC's operations and the city's civic issues; consequently, his criticism has put the administration under scrutiny. He has stressed the necessity of identifying danger zones, taking immediate action on complaints, and effectively controlling the rising stray dog ??population. The question of when the Municipal Corporation will seriously address this critical issue concerning the safety of Nagpur's residents has now been raised forcefully.
