Tukaram Mundhe's Transfer 'On Hold'; Fear of Transparent Administration at the Kumbh Mela?
Mumbai: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the state government effected further reshuffles within the administration on Wednesday. In this round, transfer orders were issued for five Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers. However, the controversial IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe—who was moved from the Department of Disability Welfare—has not yet received an appointment to a new post. He will have to wait for some time longer.
Over the past 15 days, the state government has transferred a total of more than 40 IAS officers. On March 31, 10 officers were transferred, followed by another 25 transfers within the subsequent two days. The current round involves five officers.
Details of Today's Transfers:
Dr. B.N. Patil, Director of Tourism, has been appointed as the Project Director for the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) under the Higher and Technical Education Department in Mumbai.
Mangesh Joshi, Deputy Director of YASHADA, has been appointed as the Director of Tourism.
Kuldeep Jangam, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Solapur Zilla Parishad, has been transferred to the post of Additional Commissioner of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.
Kushal Jain has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Solapur Zilla Parishad.
Revayya Dongre has been appointed as the Assistant Collector for the Kelapur subdivision in the Yavatmal district.
Among all these transfers, that of Tukaram Mundhe remains the most talked-about. While serving as the Secretary of the Department of Disability Welfare, Mundhe took strict action against fraudulent disability welfare organizations, thereby curbing the misappropriation of government funds. Sources suggest that the operators of the affected organizations exerted political pressure to orchestrate his transfer.
After being moved from the Disability Welfare Department, Mundhe was initially slated to be appointed to the Department of Relief and Rehabilitation (Disaster Management). However, the incumbent Principal Secretary, Vineeta Singhal, reportedly utilized her political influence to block her own transfer. Since the funds amounting to thousands of crores—allocated by the Central Government for organizing the Nashik Kumbh Mela—are to be disbursed through this department, concerns have been raised that Mr. Mundhe's transparent and stringent administrative style could create difficulties for certain individuals. Consequently, it is reported that Mr. Mundhe's transfer to this department has been cancelled.
According to sources, the government is currently seeking a suitable new posting for Mr. Mundhe, and he has, for the time being, been placed 'on waiting.'
While this transfer process reflects the continuous reshuffling within the administration, Mr. Mundhe's case has sparked considerable discussion across both political and administrative circles.
