Voting Underway Today for All 140 Assembly Seats in Kerala; Preparations Also in Full Swing for West Bengal Elections

New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram/Kolkata: Today, Thursday, April 9, 2026, voting is underway in a single phase for all 140 Assembly seats across the state of Kerala. Voters have been thronging polling stations since early morning. Simultaneously, the electoral process for the West Bengal Assembly elections is also in progress, with voting for the state's 294 seats scheduled to take place in two phases (on April 23 and 29).
Kerala has a total of 2.71 crore voters. This time, a triangular contest is expected between the Left Democratic Front (LDF), the United Democratic Front (UDF), and the BJP-led NDA. According to several surveys, indications suggest that no single party is likely to secure a clear majority.
In West Bengal, the main electoral battle is expected to unfold between the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the BJP, and the Left parties. The Election Commission has enforced the Model Code of Conduct in both states. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
All administrative machinery is fully prepared to ensure that the voting process is conducted peacefully and transparently. The Election Commission has appealed to voters to exercise their franchise as early as possible in the morning.
