*Mandatory to Clearly Label ‘Cheese Analog’ on Menu Cards

-102 Establishments Inspected Across the District
Nagpur, May 15: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Nagpur Division, has taken strict measures following reports that customers at hotels, restaurants, and fast-food centers were being misled by being served ‘cheese analog’ under the guise of ‘Paneer’ (cottage cheese). It has now been made mandatory to clearly indicate on menu cards, electronic display boards, and ordering machines whenever cheese analog is being used as a substitute for Paneer. Legal action has been initiated against establishments failing to comply with these regulations, beginning with the issuance of show-cause notices.
Between May 5 and May 11, the FDA’s Nagpur Division conducted a special inspection drive covering restaurants, hotels, caterers, and fast-food establishments within the city and its surrounding areas. A total of 102 establishments were inspected during this campaign. K.R. Jaipurkar, Joint Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, stated that out of these, 77 food business operators were found to have clearly distinguished between Paneer and cheese analog.
According to the Food Safety and Standards Act, consumers are entitled to receive complete information regarding the ingredients contained in food products. Consequently, he emphasized that it is mandatory for food business operators to clearly present information regarding ingredients, nutritional values, and health-related details to their customers.
Regular inspections of such establishments will continue henceforth. Strict action will be taken under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, against those found violating the regulations; such measures could include the suspension or cancellation of their licenses. Joint Commissioner K.R. Jaipurkar of the Food and Drug Administration has appealed to all hotels, restaurants, caterers, and fast-food operators to ensure that they clearly distinguish between ‘Paneer’ and ‘Cheese Analog’ on their menu cards and display boards.
