New Districts In Maharashtra: For the administrative convenience of the state of Maharashtra and to accelerate local development, 21 new districts have been proposed to be created. These new districts will be formed by dividing some of the existing 35 districts. An official announcement in this regard is expected on January 26, 2025. Hindustan Post has reported this.

History and Background
Maharashtra was formed on 1 May 1960, at that time there were only 25 districts in the state. Later, new districts were created due to the increase in population and administrative needs in the state. In 2014, Palghar district was created from the division of Thane district. In 2018, a state government committee submitted a proposal for 22 new districts. Most of them are included in the current proposal.
Special importance of Udgir district
A new district, Udgir, will be formed by merging parts of Latur and Nanded districts. This district will be important in terms of population, administration and local development.
Advantages of new districts
Administration will become easier and more efficient
As the size of each district decreases, the administration will become more agile and effective.
Local development will gain momentum
Development will reach villages; There is a possibility of major improvements in employment, education, health.
The problems of citizens will be solved quickly
Special focus can be given to the administration of each district.
Challenges and difficulties
A large amount of financial investment will be required for the creation of new districts. Capital will be required to build district headquarters, government offices, and infrastructure. Besides, administrative restructuring can be challenging.
Role of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis
In 2017-18, the then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had highlighted the need for new districts. The current government has started working on this proposal, and priority is being given to development and administrative reforms.
