5 Government-Appointed Directors Now in Large Cooperative Institutions; 12 Key Decisions Taken at Cabinet Meeting

Mumbai, November 4, 2026: A state cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, resulted in several significant decisions affecting various sectors, including the cooperative sector. The most notable decision concerns the appointment of government-nominated directors to large cooperative institutions. Cooperative organizations in the state with an annual turnover exceeding ?500 crore will now have five government-nominated members on their boards of directors. This group will include one government official—holding a rank no lower than that of an Assistant Registrar—along with four individuals possessing experience in the operations of such institutions. While the government official will not have voting rights, the other four members will be entitled to vote on the board. However, these four members will not be eligible to contest elections for office-bearer positions within the organization. The government has clarified that this amendment will not apply to District Central Cooperative Banks. The cabinet has approved the necessary amendments to Section 73A(2) of the Maharashtra Cooperative Societies Act, 1960. Furthermore, it was decided not to appoint administrators for 18 institutions—classified under category 'A'—whose terms have expired or where election processes have been suspended due to drought conditions. Other key cabinet decisions include:
An increase in the internship stipend for final-year veterinary students, intended to encourage them to provide services at veterinary clinics in rural areas.

A more than two-fold increase in the subsistence allowance for students residing in hostels belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC), Denotified Tribes (Vimukta Jati), Nomadic Tribes, and Special Backward Categories.
