Delhi Tightens Grip on Maharashtra BJP Following Legislative Council Defeats; Central Leadership Closely Monitoring Tensions with Shinde-led Shiv Sena

Mumbai: Following the defeats in the Nagpur and Pune Graduates’ constituencies of the Legislative Council, the central leadership of the BJP has intensified its focus on the party’s organizational and political affairs in Maharashtra. Indications suggest that senior officials appointed from Delhi will now play a more active role to ensure discipline, enhance operational vigor, and improve coordination. Simultaneously, the central leadership is keeping a close watch on the growing friction between the BJP and the Shinde-led Shiv Sena. In the wake of the loss in Pune, the party’s National General Secretary (Organization), B. L. Santhosh, visited the city to hold a rigorous review meeting with corporators and key office-bearers. He sternly advised them to "eschew a lavish lifestyle and remain accessible to the public 24/7." It is understood that similar corrective guidance will be extended to elected representatives across the state. For the first time, the position of General Secretary (Organization) in Maharashtra—which had remained vacant for several years—has been filled by a leader from outside the state; Ajay Jamwal, from Himachal Pradesh, was appointed to the role a month ago. Currently on a tour of the state, Jamwal has issued clear directives to elected representatives and party officials: their work must speak for itself, the party’s image must be upheld, and instead of trailing behind leaders, they should engage directly with the public—while also promoting and ensuring the reach of welfare schemes launched by the central and state governments. He further directed that in constituencies where the BJP does not have an incumbent MLA, legislators from neighboring areas should take an active interest. When some party members suggested that the Shinde-led Shiv Sena provides significant financial support to its own MLAs and office-bearers, Jamwal advised them, "Do not make comparisons; just keep working. Your concerns will be conveyed to the appropriate quarters." According to sources, Jamwal, along with the BJP’s Maharashtra in-charge Baijayant Panda and his deputies, has been gathering feedback from various sources over the past few days regarding the state’s political landscape, the BJP’s current standing, tensions with allies (particularly the Shinde-led Shiv Sena), organizational shortcomings, and the level of coordination between the government and the party. The expectations articulated by B. L. Santosh and Ajay Jamwal are aligned with this feedback. This serves as a clear indication that the influence of senior leaders deputed by the central BJP leadership is set to increase. There are also strong signals that the party intends to address critical issues—such as the prevailing lethargy within the organization, the failure to effectively counter opposition criticism despite being in power, and the lack of coordination among key leaders—by implementing necessary corrective measures.
