Ahmedabad plane crash: 242 passengers including Sunil Tatkare's relative die, information about Aparna Mahadik

Ahmedabad, June 12, 2025: An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft crashed at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on Thursday afternoon. Flight AI-171, bound for London's Gatwick Airport, crashed in the Meghaninagar area just minutes after takeoff. There were a total of 242 people on board, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members, including Aparna Mahadik, a relative of Nationalist Congress leader Sunil Tatkare.
Horror of the accident and rescue operation
The plane had taken off at 1:38 pm, but lost contact with air traffic control within minutes after giving a 'May Day' call. The plane crashed into the TB ward of a hospital in a residential area in Meghaninagar, causing the plane to catch fire and sending a plume of black smoke into the area. Gujarat Police has informed that all 242 people on board the plane died in the accident. Apart from this, 10-12 doctors from the hospital have also been injured.
The Ahmedabad Fire Department immediately sent more than five fire engines to the scene, while three teams of NDRF and BSF have started rescue operations. The injured have been admitted to B.J. Medical College and Civil Hospital. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has contacted the Chief Minister, Home Minister and Police Commissioner of Gujarat and assured the Central government of help. Who is Aparna Mahadik?
Aparna Mahadik, who died in this accident, is the wife of the nephew of Nationalist Congress Party leader and MP Sunil Tatkare. Aparna was a crew member of Air India and was working on this flight. According to information, Aparna's husband Amol Mahadik is also working in Air India. Aparna had reached Ahmedabad on Thursday morning to fly to London. The accident has come as a huge blow to the Tatkare family.
Passengers on the plane and cause of the accident
There were 169 Indians, 53 British, 7 Portuguese and 1 Canadian passengers on the plane. Apart from this, former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani is also known to have been on the plane. The DGCA has started an investigation into the cause of the accident, but according to preliminary information, the possibility of a technical glitch or engine failure during take-off is being expressed.
