Change of name of Ahmednagar District

**Change of name of Ahmednagar District: Not Ahmednagar but Ahilyanagar from today, Notification announced by State Govt.**
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Dharshiv in Maharashtra have been renamed after another district and city. Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra has now officially become Ahilyanagar. The state government has announced the notification regarding this name change on Wednesday. Last week, the Union Cabinet approved a proposal to rename Ahmednagar as Ahilyanagar.
The state government has completed all the legal procedures to rename Ahmednagar as Ahilyanagar. A notification in this regard has been published in the Maharashtra Government Gazette on 9th October. As per this notification, the name of the district and taluka along with Ahmednagar city will now be Ahilyanagar. Earlier, the grand coalition government had renamed Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharshiv.
**Why Ahmednagar was named Ahilyanagar?**
Maharani Ahilya Devi Holkar of Indore contributed to naming Ahmednagar as Ahilyanagar. She was born in Chandi village of Ahmednagar district. His parents were Mankoji Shinde and Sushila Shinde. They got married in the Holkar family of Indore. Ahilya Devi worked extensively in religious, educational and cultural fields. The aim of his rule was social welfare and humanitarianism, for which he was known throughout the country. He helped build temples, ghats and dharamshalas across the country. After the deaths of her husband Khanderao Holkar and father-in-law Malharrao Holkar, Ahilyabai successfully managed the affairs of the Holkar family.
