Himachal Pradesh: Monsoon wreaks havoc in Mandi, four dead, cloudburst wreaks havoc

Monsoon has wreaked havoc in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. Torrential rains and cloudbursts in the last 30 hours wreaked havoc in the district, bringing back memories of the horrific tragedy of 2023. There are reports of heavy damage in areas around Karsog, Thunag, and Sundernagar. So far four people have died, while 16 people are reported missing, out of which nine are feared to have been swept away by the strong currents. The Beas river is in spate, causing heavy damage to nearby houses.
The administration has evacuated more than 200 people to safer places. Landslides and flash floods have also caused loss of life and property in Jogindernagar and Dharampur. One person is reported dead in Jogindernagar, while seven houses and several cow sheds have been damaged in Dharampur. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the next 24 hours, warning of heavy rains and landslides.
Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu has said that relief and rescue operations will be monitored in the affected areas. He has appealed to the people to follow the guidelines of the administration. People living on the banks of the Beas river have been advised to move to safer places. The danger has also increased due to the release of water from the Pandoh Dam.
Roads, bridges, and many buildings have been washed away in the district. There are reports of heavy destruction in Purana Bazar, Panjrat, Kuti, Baral, Mamel, and Bhyal villages of Karsog. A dozen houses, cow sheds, and animals have been washed away in Syathi village. The Chandigarh-Manali highway has been damaged at many places, affecting traffic.
Teams of NDRF, ITBP, Police, and Home Guard are engaged in rescue operations. Missing people are being searched with the help of drones. The weather department has warned of flash floods in Chamba, Hamirpur, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Solan districts.
This disaster is another big blow for Himachal Pradesh, as the state has faced monsoon-related disasters earlier too. The administration and local people are trying to deal with this crisis together, but the intermittent rain is adding to the challenges.
