Did the NDA Benefit from Midnight Votes? Questions Raised Over 'Impossible' Voting Patterns in Andhra Elections

New Delhi: Allegations of major irregularities in the voting process have surfaced regarding the Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections (2024). During a press conference held in Delhi, economist Parakala Prabhakar raised serious questions concerning this matter.
According to Prabhakar, on election day (May 13, 2024), voting continued at approximately 3,500 polling stations between 11:45 PM and 2:00 AM. Of the total votes cast, 4.16 percent were recorded during this late-night period, and these votes reportedly provided a significant advantage to the NDA.
Nearly 5.2 million (52 lakh) votes were recorded between 8:00 PM and 2:00 AM.
More than 1.7 million (17 lakh) votes were cast after midnight alone.
In some instances, a single vote was cast in just 6 seconds.
After midnight, on average, one vote was recorded every 20 seconds.
Prabhakar stated, "It takes 14 seconds for an EVM to reset; how, then, could a vote be cast in just 6 seconds? Is it even possible for a voter to enter the polling station, press the button, and exit in such a short span of time?" He asserted that something "abnormal" had occurred after 8:00 PM.
Significant fluctuations in voter turnout percentages were also observed following the election:
Immediately after voting concluded, a turnout figure of 68.04% was reported.
By 8:00 PM, this figure had risen to 68.12%.
At 11:45 PM, it suddenly surged to 76.50%.
Four days later, the final voter turnout percentage was officially declared as 81.79%.
In this election, the NDA (comprising the TDP, BJP, and Jana Sena) achieved a landslide victory. Led by Chandrababu Naidu, the NDA secured 164 out of the 175 Assembly seats. This tally includes 135 seats won by the TDP, 21 by the Jana Sena, and 8 by the BJP. Chandrababu Naidu has become the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for the fourth time.
During a press conference, prominent figures such as senior advocate Prashant Bhushan and leader Yogendra Yadav also expressed concerns regarding a lack of transparency. They demanded that the counting of VVPAT slips be made mandatory, Form 17C be made public, and booth-level data be made available immediately.
These allegations have cast a shadow of doubt over the credibility of the Andhra Pradesh elections, and further clarification on the matter is now being awaited from the Election Commission.
