MEMU Train Derails Near Nagpur; Major Disaster Averted Due to Low Speed; Railway Administration Initiates Inquiry
Nagpur: On Sunday night, a MEMU train traveling from Balaghat towards Itwari derailed between Kalmna and Kamptee. Fortunately, as the train was running on the fourth line, its speed was low; consequently, a major catastrophe was averted. There were no casualties or injuries reported in this incident. However, a momentary atmosphere of panic prevailed among the passengers at the time of the accident.
According to reports, the Balaghat–Itwari MEMU train (No. 68715) derailed around 9:45 PM at kilometer mark 1120/9-10, situated between Kalmna and Kamptee. The front wheels of the first two coaches immediately following the engine went off the tracks. Prior to the accident, passengers heard a loud thud, suggesting the train's wheels had struck a hard object. This was followed by a slight jolt, and the train was subsequently brought to a halt.
Preliminary information suggests that construction-related materials or iron steps had been placed in close proximity to the railway tracks. It is suspected that the incident occurred as a result of the train colliding with these objects. The railway administration has initiated an inquiry into the matter and has undertaken efforts to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. Railway technical teams arrived at the scene, and the work of re-railing the affected coaches has been completed.
The accident did not significantly impact railway traffic operations. While a few trains ran behind schedule for a short duration, the tracks were cleared promptly, and traffic was soon restored to normalcy.
Meanwhile, in the wake of this incident, questions have been raised regarding the safety implications of storing unauthorized construction materials in the vicinity of railway tracks. Concerns are being voiced that this matter constitutes a serious lapse from the perspective of railway safety protocols.
