Election Commission Targets Bengal! Mamata Outraged

Election Commission Targets Bengal! Mamata Outraged – Arbitrary Transfers of 50 Officials, Including Chief Secretary and DGP; Situation Resembles President's Rule; Bengal Is Not Afraid—It Fights Back!
Kolkata, March 20, 2026: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched a scathing attack on the actions taken by the Election Commission of India (ECI). With the 2026 Assembly elections in view, more than 50 senior officials across the state have been removed suddenly and arbitrarily; Banerjee has termed this an "undeclared operation" and a situation akin to "President's Rule."
Mamata Banerjee posted on social media, stating, "This is not an administrative reshuffle, but high-level government interference." She has also written a letter to the Election Commission to formally express her displeasure.
She asserted, "The BJP has failed to win the trust of the people. It is attempting to seize power through pressure, intimidation, and the misuse of institutions." Assuring the officials of the state—along with their families—of her solidarity, Mamata declared, "Bengal will never bow down to fear. Bengal will fight, it will resist, and it will foil every conspiracy."
Immediately after the Election Commission announced the election schedule, orders were issued for the transfers of Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty, Home Secretary Jagdish Prasad Meena, DGP Piyush Pandey, Kolkata Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar, and numerous other senior officials. New appointments have been made, or the officials in question have been relieved of any duties related to the elections. According to the Commission, these transfers are intended to ensure the fairness of the elections; however, Mamata has characterized this move as the "nationalization of institutions" and an "anti-Bengal" agenda.
Key Highlights:
Transfers of over 50 officials: Including the Chief Secretary, DGP, Home Secretary, District Collectors, Superintendents of Police (SPs), etc.
Mamata's Allegations: The Election Commission is targeting Bengal; this constitutes political interference.
Reference made to an "undeclared military-style operation" and a situation resembling "President's Rule." BJP's Reaction: Public trust has eroded, rendering the institution ineffective. Bengali Solidarity: Support from officials and their families; Bengal stood its ground.
This incident is likely to heat up the political atmosphere in West Bengal and could further intensify the conflict between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP. The Election Commission has not yet issued an official response regarding this matter.
