The Central Groundwater Board (CGWB) in consultation with the States / UTs has prepared 'Master Plan for Artificial Recharge of Groundwater - 2020'. Master Plan - To harness 185 billion cubic meters (BCM) in 2020, about 1.42 crore rainwater harvesting and construction of artificial recharge structures are envisaged in the country.
The National Aquifer Mapping and Management Program (NAQUIM) is being implemented by CGWB as part of the Central Region Planning, Groundwater Management and Regulation (GWM & R) scheme. NAQUIM envisages mapping of aquifers (water bearing structures), their characterization and development of aquifer management schemes to facilitate sustainable management of groundwater resources in the country. NAQUIM outputs are shared with the States / UTs for appropriate intervention.
The Government of India generally provides artificial groundwater recharge / water harvesting in the country through Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana - Watershed Development Component (PMKSY-WDC), Surface Minor Irrigation (SMI) and Supports functions. Repair, Renewal and Restoration (RRR) of Water Bodies Schemes is a component of PMKSY.
