Major change in Maharashtra Lokayukta Act: State officers in central institutions now under scrutiny
Nagpur, December 12, 2025: A historic decision was taken in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly today. An amendment bill was passed that would bring all officers appointed by the state government to institutions or authorities existing under central law under the ambit of the Lokayukta. It is expected that this bill will give Maharashtra a stronger foothold in the fight against corruption.
The Maharashtra Lokayukta Amendment Bill was passed unanimously in the Assembly and Legislative Council on Thursday. The bill was initiated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. These amendments have been brought in keeping with the instructions of the President. Earlier, in the Lokayukta Act passed in 2021, Chief Ministers were also brought under scrutiny. Although the President approved this act, some important amendments were suggested, which are now being implemented through this bill.
Chief Minister Fadnavis said, "When the state government made the Lokayukta Act, central laws were in place. Now their names have changed, we are amending the law accordingly. First, Lokayuktas will be appointed and then these changes will be fully implemented. This decision is important to increase transparency and accountability." His statement expressed satisfaction among the legislators.
With this bill, state-appointed officials in central authorities will now have to face investigation by the Lokayukta on charges of corruption. Opposition leaders including the Congress also expressed their belief that this will bring more accountability and discipline to the administrative system in the state. Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar praised the bill and said, "This law will accelerate the development of Maharashtra."
This decision is likely to bring about positive changes in the political environment in Maharashtra. Experts believe that Lokayuktas will be appointed sooner in the future and the investigation process will be more effective.
