Mumbai, dt. 8: For artificial insemination of cows and buffaloes from farmers in the state, high hered calves will be produced using sex sorted semen. In this, 90 per cent high calf female calves will be produced in the state. Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Sunil Kedar said that a revolutionary decision has been taken to make this semen available at only Rs 81.
Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Business Development Sunil Kedar inaugurated the program for production and supply of gender specific semen at the Ministry. On this occasion, Principal Secretary of Animal Husbandry Department Anup Kumar, Secretary of Information and Public Relations Department and Director General Dr. Dilip Pandharpatte was present.
Speaking to an online media correspondent, Kedar said the initiative would help economic hardship for hardworking farmers in rural areas.
According to the 20th Livestock Census of 2017, the state has an average of 50 per cent male and 50 per cent female calves as per the natural law. The entire cattle slaughter law has been implemented in the state. Also, with the advent of modern technology and mechanization in agriculture, the need for oxen for farming has decreased. Kedar said that the additional cost incurred by the breeders to raise the extra male calves born through artificial insemination would now be negligible.
In this context, in order to keep the breeding of male calves to a minimum, about 90 per cent female calves would be produced if the sperm produced using the latest technology of sex-determined semen instead of conventional semen was used in cows and buffaloes under artificial insemination program.
The amount of semen determined by the Maharashtra Livestock Development Board of the Animal Husbandry Department is Genus Breeding India Pvt. Ltd. (ABS India) at a rate of Rs. 575 per quintal and a total of 6 lakh 80 thousand quintals will be used in 5 years for artificial insemination of farmers / cattle breeders in the state. This project will help in increasing the milk production of the state in future by producing 90 per cent high calf females (Kalvadi / Pardya) in the state.
The price of a sex determined semen is Rs.575 and Rs.264 is the share of Central Government, Rs.174 is the share of State Government and out of the remaining Rs.140 / - Rs.100 / - will be borne by Maharashtra Livestock Development Board. Under this program, the cows / buffaloes of the farmers have been artificially inseminated using sex-determined semen. Such farmers will have to pay only Rs. 81 / - as service fee of Rs. 41 / - payable to the government for the remaining Rs. 40 plus artificial insemination. That is, the amount of semen prescribed to the farmers was available at Rs.1000 / - to Rs.1,200 / -. The same amount will now be available at Rs.
