No ban on shops based on religion at Nashik Kumbh Mela; strict directives from Minority Commission Chairman Pyare Khan
Nashik: Maharashtra State Minority Commission Chairman Pyare Khan has issued strict directives to take legal action against those opposing the setting up of shops based on religion during the Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
Speaking at a press conference following a review meeting at the District Collector's office in Nashik, Pyare Khan stated that complaints regarding threats to minority traders at the Kumbh Mela had been received. He noted that under Article 15(2) of the Constitution, discrimination based on religion or caste in public places and commercial spheres is prohibited. He emphasized that officials must not act contrary to the Constitution and should take stern action against such tendencies.
Observing that certain anti-social elements engage in such tactics for cheap popularity, Khan remarked that this tarnishes the image of the Hindu community globally. While such elements exist in every community, their actions bring disrepute to Hindus.
Earlier, Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane had appealed for only Hindu-owned shops to be allowed at the Kumbh Mela. Without explicitly naming him, Pyare Khan addressed the complaints regarding Christian and Muslim traders being prevented from setting up shops.
He also spoke about demands to bar Muslims from Dandiya and Navratri events by checking their Aadhaar cards. He stated that since Dandiya is a Hindu festival, organizers have the right to make decisions; however, it is inappropriate to exclude the poor while welcoming actors like Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Salman Khan.
Pyare Khan also expressed concern regarding the MPSC exam paper leak case and irregularities in certain minority educational institutions.
