TISS drops Chief Justice Surya Kant from convocation over fears of protest; Dr. C.S. Pramesh to be chief guest

Mumbai: The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has removed the name of Chief Justice Surya Kant from the invitation list for its 86th convocation ceremony at the last minute. The ceremony is now scheduled for Saturday, August 22, with Dr. C.S. Pramesh, Director of Tata Memorial Hospital, invited as the chief guest.
The event was originally scheduled for August 2, and the institute had invited Chief Justice Surya Kant to preside over the ceremony. However, just 48 hours prior, emails were sent stating that the event was being postponed due to "unforeseen circumstances." TISS did not provide a specific reason at the time.
According to reports, students and officials had expressed serious concerns regarding potential protests and security arrangements linked to the Chief Justice's visit. Justice Surya Kant had previously referred to unemployed Indian youth as "cockroaches." As this remark was linked to student protests across the country, there were fears of opposition or disruptions during the ceremony. In an official statement, the institute noted that the event could not be held in a "conducive atmosphere" and that proceeding as planned could have impacted students, faculty, staff, dignitaries, and campus life.
The postponement of the convocation disappointed graduating students and their families, many of whom had already made travel arrangements. Subsequently, TISS announced that financial assistance would be provided to affected students on a case-by-case basis.
Dr. C.S. Pramesh will now serve as the chief guest at the rescheduled ceremony. TISS officials were unavailable to provide further clarification on why Chief Justice Surya Kant's name was dropped from the event.
