Nagpur Metro is the standard gauge metro. The main objective of the proposed broad gauge railway project is to connect the satellite cities near Nagpur to Nagpur by operating metro coaches on the broad gauge route of Indian Railways. If the ownership of the railway coaches in this broad gauge project is given to private investors, this position will be complementary and beneficial to the investors, passengers, Indian Railways Mahometro as well as MSMEs. This is the first such project in the state. It will be financially viable and will be replicated across the country, said Union Minister for Road Transport Highways and Union Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Nitin Gadkari in Nagpur.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the Investors Meeting for Broad Gauge Railway Metro jointly organized by Mahametro, a development agency under the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Nagpur, today at the auditorium at the local South Airport Metro station. On this occasion, the managing director of Maha Metro, Dr. Brijesh Dixit, Director, MSME Development Institute, PM Parlewar were present.
The proposed broad gauge metro station will connect satellite towns like Katol, Bhandara, Wardha, Amravati, Narkhed, Ramtek Wardha near Nagpur to Nagpur. The platform, signal system on the broad gauge railway line of Indian Railways is already ready. The rolling stock of Metro required for this will be used in this project. The cost of such coaches will be around Rs 30 crore. This broad gauge train has a speed of 120 kmph, which will make it possible to cover the distance from Nagpur to Amravati in just one and a half hours. The Broadgauge Metro will have the same economy and business class as the aircraft and will have entertainment and catering facilities. The rights to sell advertisements, catering and other entertainment facilities in the metro will be vested in the concerned private investors and will benefit them. Gadkari said that this metro project will start in a year and a half
Gadkari said that by merging Standard Gauge Metro, Broad Gauge Metro and Nagpur Bus Facility, it would be useful to increase the inter-connectivity of railways by integrating Kamathi, Khapri, Butibori, Itwari, Kalmana railway stations in Nagpur like Mumbai local in this Broad Gauge Metro.
The ownership of these coaches will be given mainly to the entrepreneurs of Vidarbha so that the locals can get employment, he added.
Managing Director of Maha Metro, Dr. Brijesh Dixit said Metro has taken the initiative for the project since July 2018 and a memorandum of understanding is in the final stages. It will be approved soon, he said.
Director of MSME Development Institute Nagpur P.M. Parlewar informed that the Ministry has come up with an idea for entrepreneurs to come together and buy Broad Gauge Metro coaches through MSME cluster and the idea has been well received by the investors.
During the fair, various bus operators, entrepreneurs and stakeholders presented their plans. Gadkari also answered the questions of the investors.
The event was attended by officials of Maha Metro, MSME Development Corporation as well as entrepreneurs, directors of bus industry.
