Will Lok Sabha Seats Increase from 546 to 861 to Implement Women's Reservation? Opposition Takes a Dig at Special Session

New Delhi: Indications suggest that the Central Government is preparing to convene a three-day special session of Parliament to discuss the Women's Reservation Bill. This session is likely to be held on April 16, 17, and 18. It is reported that two crucial bills aimed at implementing women's reservation will be introduced during this session.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated in the Rajya Sabha that today (April 2) marks the final day of the second phase of the Budget Session. He noted that the House would be adjourned today but would reconvene shortly. He clarified that a very important bill is set to be introduced within the next 2-3 weeks and that discussions regarding this are currently underway with the Opposition.
Two bills are slated for introduction: one for the implementation of the Women's Reservation Act, and another for the delimitation (redrawing) of constituencies based on the latest census data. Consequently, the number of Lok Sabha seats is expected to increase from 546 to 861.
However, the Opposition has strongly criticized the government. Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, alleged that the government is attempting to derive political mileage by introducing this bill during the ongoing Assembly elections. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also demanded that an all-party meeting be convened only after the Assembly elections conclude (on April 29).
Responding to the Opposition's allegations, Kiren Rijiju asserted that this issue should not be politicized. He emphasized that the government is committed to fulfilling the promises made to the women of the country. While the government supports women's reservation, discussions are currently being held to carefully consider the far-reaching implications of the proposed bills.
Against the backdrop of the ongoing Assembly elections, the debate surrounding this issue has intensified. The government continues to engage in consultations with the Opposition and is also actively considering the possibility of holding an all-party meeting.
