Waterlogging and Traffic Disruptions in Mumbai and Suburbs; IMD Issues Heavy Rain Warning

Mumbai: The intensity of rainfall in Mumbai has increased since Monday, with heavy, continuous rain persisting across the city and suburbs on Wednesday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an 'Orange Alert' for Mumbai, Palghar, and Thane districts until Saturday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for the next three days.
Following rains that began on Tuesday night, waterlogging was observed on Wednesday morning in suburbs such as Andheri, Malad, Goregaon, and Kandivali. Traffic was significantly disrupted, particularly because the Andheri subway was completely submerged. Incidents of tree falls were reported in areas including Andheri West, J.P. Road, Lokhandwala Circle, and the RTO vicinity.
Rainfall Figures:
(Recorded between 8 PM Tuesday and 8 AM Wednesday):

Mankhurd – 170 mm
Chembur – 169 mm
Govandi – 163 mm
Byculla – 162 mm
Mumbai Central – 142 mm
Bandra-Kurla Complex – 132 mm
Borivali – 126 mm

Many areas recorded rainfall exceeding 100 mm. After a dry first fortnight in June, the monsoon now appears to have become active. With a low-pressure area developing over the Bay of Bengal, the intensity of rainfall is likely to increase further in Mumbai and along the Konkan coast.
Citizens are urged to exercise caution. Please plan your travel keeping in mind the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas. Check IMD advisories for further updates.
