“Even within the egalitarian Warkari movement, 60 percent of people are bolstering communal forces” – Sharad Pawar

New Delhi: Sharad Pawar, President of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar Faction), has made a significant statement regarding the Warkari sect. He asserted, “People with regressive ideologies have infiltrated the Warkari sect. The discourse of 60 percent of the people within this sect serves to strengthen communal forces.”
Sharad Pawar articulated this stance in an interview published in the souvenir of the All India Marathi Literary Conference, organized by a group of female government officers. He stated, “Even in a movement dedicated to equality—such as the Warkari sect—regressive elements have begun to infiltrate. When they speak, they frame their arguments in a manner that provides greater strength to communal forces.”
Pawar further added, “Therefore, we have now begun compiling a list. Currently, there are approximately 40 individuals who articulate progressive viewpoints through *Kirtans* (devotional discourses) and *Pravachans* (sermons). There is a dire need for such voices. Unfortunately, women are conspicuously absent from this path of social awakening.”
This statement has sparked a debate within political circles.
Reactions:
Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Sanjay Shirsat leveled sharp criticism against Sharad Pawar’s statement. He remarked, “The Warkari sect comprises people from numerous castes; it is not limited to any single caste. There is an ongoing attempt to malign the Hindu religion. Sharad Pawar should refrain from attempting to fragment the strength of Hindu society.”
Conversely, MLA Amol Mitkari voiced his support for Sharad Pawar’s statement. He asked, “What exactly did Pawar say that was incorrect? The views he has articulated are the truth. That figure—60 percent—is likely even higher. Why did those who are raising an outcry now remain silent when incidents of atrocities against minor girls occurred?”
Citing the cases involving Ashok Kharat, Gunjal Maharaj, and the incidents that took place in Alandi, Mitkari lent further weight to the statistics cited by Sharad Pawar. Sharad Pawar's statement has sparked a fresh debate regarding progressive and regressive ideologies within the Warkari sect. As further reactions continue to pour in, the political atmosphere appears to be heating up.
