Arbitrary Practices at Weighbridges to End! Online Surveillance on Sugar Factories Brings Major Relief to Farmers

Nanded: The Maharashtra government has taken strict measures in response to complaints from sugarcane-growing farmers regarding fraudulent weighing practices. An expert committee has been appointed to curb malpractices at sugar factory weighbridges, and this committee is scheduled to submit its report by March 12. It has become evident that this initiative will put a firm check on the arbitrary conduct of sugar factories.
The government has constituted a four-member committee comprising officials from the Department of Legal Metrology. The committee is chaired by S. H. Chate, the Joint Controller for the Sambhaji Nagar Division. D. P. Pawar, Deputy Controller for Sangli, has been appointed as Vice-Chairman; D. K. Shejwal, Inspector for Wagholi, as Member Secretary; and R. P. Talkute, Inspector for Baramati, as a committee member.
Every year, as soon as the crushing season begins, the Office of the Sugar Commissioner is inundated with complaints regarding weighbridges. However, the Department of Legal Metrology consistently claims—year after year—that "all weighbridges are free of errors." This committee has been appointed specifically to investigate this glaring discrepancy. This time, the focus will be placed on technical parameters rather than relying solely on documentary verification.
The committee's primary strategy involves directly linking the weighbridges at all sugar factories across the state to a central server. This ensures that if any tampering occurs at a weighbridge, it will be immediately detected by the system. The existing Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will be modified to implement a more robust and secure framework. It has been announced that the committee will maintain constant surveillance over all sugar factories within the state.
Committee Chairman S. H. Chate stated, "We will propose necessary improvements to the current system. These technical modifications will ensure that any discrepancies in weighing are detected instantly. This committee will keep a close watch on all sugar mills across the state."
Important Advice for Farmers:
• Ensure that the weighbridge displays the current year's official seal and certification. • Before loading a tractor or truck, verify that the weighing scale reads ‘0.00’.
• Immediately after weighing, obtain a computerized receipt and verify the time, date, and vehicle registration number printed on it.
• In the event of a significant discrepancy, lodge a complaint with the Office of the Sugar Commissioner or the local Legal Metrology Department.
The implementation of these new regulations has kindled hope among sugarcane growers that they will receive justice. It has been indicated that the government will take concrete action as soon as the committee's report is submitted.
