US-Russia-China Clash at UN Security Council Over Iran Nuclear Program; Fierce Opposition to Washington's Bid to Revive Sanctions

New Delhi (Online Lokmat Correspondent): A direct confrontation erupted between the United States, Russia, and China over Iran's nuclear program during a United Nations Security Council meeting held on Thursday. The U.S. demanded the imposition of new, stringent sanctions on Iran and sought to halt its nuclear, missile, and conventional weapons programs, while Russia and China accused the U.S. of stoking a global crisis.
During the meeting of the 15-member Security Council, Russia and China attempted to block discussions related to the UN's 1737 Committee concerning Iran. However, this attempt failed in the subsequent vote; 11 nations supported continuing the discussion, while two countries abstained. U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz stated clearly, "All member states must impose sanctions on Iran, including an arms embargo, a ban on the transfer of missile technology, and the freezing of financial assets. These measures are essential to curb Iran's dangerous programs."
Waltz alleged that Russia and China are shielding Iran. China's UN Representative, Fu Cong, delivered a strong rebuttal to this claim. He asserted, "The United States is the primary culprit behind the nuclear crisis involving Iran. They openly resorted to coercion during negotiations, thereby rendering diplomatic efforts futile."
Meanwhile, Iran's UN Ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, maintained that his country's nuclear program is entirely peaceful in nature. "We will not accept any new sanctions," he declared unequivocally.
This heated exchange significantly raised tensions during the Security Council meeting. The conflict appears to have intensified against the backdrop of the U.S. having launched what amounts to a diplomatic offensive against Iran over the past two weeks.
