BJP-Shiv Sena clash over Vidarbha division: Bawankule's statement becomes controversial
Nagpur: On the first day of the winter session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, the demand for a separate Vidarbha created a political storm. Congress leader Vijay Vadettiwar once again raised the demand for a separate Vidarbha as a separate state, while BJP leader and minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule stated that a separate Vidarbha is the BJP's agenda. This statement has expressed strong displeasure from other parties including Shiv Sena and has sparked a new controversy in the session.
Vadettiwar said, "A separate Vidarbha is necessary to ensure justice for the Dalit, tribal and OBC communities of Vidarbha. The Maratha community is already dominating the politics of the state. I will meet the Congress high command in Delhi after the session and raise this issue." Reacting to this, Bawankule clarified, "A separate Vidarbha is not the Congress' agenda, but the BJP's. We have been working on it since the beginning. Since Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is the leader of Vidarbha, there is special attention to the development of this region. The Congress is raising this issue for political gain and fear. Dividing the state does not bring development, instead, emphasis should be placed on fulfilling the demands of Vidarbha."
Bawankule's statement made Shiv Sena aggressive. Shiv Sena Minister Sanjay Shirsat said, "I will never support the demand for a separate Vidarbha. Maharashtra should remain one. We should not want a separate state for the development of Vidarbha, but we should work together." This dispute is likely to increase tension in the winter session. Earlier, a separate state was also demanded for Marathwada, but the BJP had said that dividing the state was wrong.
Bawankule claimed that many projects are currently being implemented on the issue of Vidarbha's development, and the Fadnavis government is giving priority to this region. However, this statement has drawn criticism from the Congress and Shiv Sena, and the possibility of changing the political equation cannot be ruled out.
