FIR registered by Delhi Police over offensive post against PM Modi; details of account holders sought from X
Delhi: The Delhi Police have registered an FIR regarding the circulation of offensive and defamatory posts against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media. A case has been registered with the Special Cell's IFSO unit under sections related to criminal intimidation, public nuisance, and defamation.
These posts were shared during a protest organized by the 'Cockroach Janata Party' (CJP) at Jantar Mantar. The Delhi Police have directed the platform X (formerly Twitter) to immediately remove such offensive posts or videos. The police have also sought complete details of the account holders, login records, and other relevant data.
The police notice states that the dissemination of such offensive and defamatory content has caused serious harm to the Prime Minister's reputation, dignity, and public image. Such content could disrupt public order, spark unnecessary political controversy, and erode public trust. Consequently, instructions have been issued to remove the concerned accounts and URLs—or disable access to them—within three hours and to preserve relevant data, logs, and subscriber information for evidentiary purposes.
The Delhi Police have previously directed social media platforms to remove such offensive content. The police's social media monitoring team has examined posts, videos, and comments uploaded during and after the protest. It was found that approximately 500 social media accounts shared deepfake and AI-generated content related to the protest, and a recommendation has been made to block these accounts.
The CJP had called off its 36-day protest regarding the NEET-UG paper leak issue on July 25, after the government accepted their demands, which included the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. A scuffle broke out between the police and students during the protest on July 20.
The police are continuing the process of removing objectionable content and obtaining information about the concerned accounts.
