Shalarth ID Scam: Jalgaon 'Education Barons' Go Underground After Sanjay Garud's Arrest; Investigation Scope Set to Expand
Jalgaon: As the investigation into the Shalarth ID scam gains momentum, talk is rife within educational circles that many heads of educational institutions in Jalgaon district have gone underground, fearing arrest. A major stir has rippled through the district's education sector following the arrest of Sanjay Bhaskarrao Garud (67)—administrator of 'The Shendurni Education Society' in Jamner taluka—from Solapur by the Nashik Special Investigation Team (SIT).
The case involves allegations of defrauding the government of approximately ?160 crore through the misuse of Shalarth IDs. A case has already been registered at the Nashik Road Police Station, and the investigation has revealed links to over 200 secondary schools across various districts, including Jalgaon. So far, 1,200 suspects have been identified, and five key suspects have been arrested. The court has remanded Sanjay Garud to police custody until August 1.
It is anticipated that the investigation will widen further following Sanjay Garud's arrest. Consequently, reports suggest that many institution heads have sought refuge in safe locations, while others have initiated steps to secure anticipatory bail.
