Forest Department Safely Captures Bear Rampaging Through Gondia City; Residents Relieved of Fear
Gondia: A Forest Department team safely captured a bear on Friday morning that had been roaming the Chhota Gondia and Ganeshnagar areas of Gondia city for the past two days. Timely intervention averted any loss of life or untoward incidents.
According to the Forest Department, the bear was first spotted on Wednesday evening near the drain behind the RTO office. It subsequently entered the Chhota Gondia area via Sanjay Nagar. On Thursday night, it was sighted in the Gaurinagar locality near Ganeshnagar. Local residents promptly informed public representatives and alerted the Forest Department; however, the rescue operation was hampered by darkness and dense vegetation.
Upon receiving information around 9:30 AM on Friday that the bear had reappeared near Shastri Chowk and the Minor Irrigation Department premises, Forest Department officials and staff immediately rushed to the site. Using specialized equipment and a well-planned rescue operation, they successfully captured the bear in a cage without causing it any injury. A large crowd had gathered in the area, creating an atmosphere of fear.
The Forest Department has urged citizens not to approach wild animals or crowd around them if spotted, and to immediately inform the department. The captured bear will undergo a medical examination before being released into its natural habitat.
Past Incidents and Concerns:
Last year, a bear had similarly entered the Zilla Parishad Public Works Department office in the same Ganeshnagar area, requiring the Forest Department to conduct a prolonged operation at that time as well. Encroachment by humans near city limits, changes in forest areas, and the increasing tendency of wild animals to venture into cities in search of food and water appear to be driving a rise in human-wildlife conflict. There is a need to place greater emphasis on the conservation of forest areas, vigilance in border regions, and public awareness.
