Rain Eludes Marathwada; Sowing Yet to Begin in 60 Villages

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar | Correspondent – ??Due to a significant lack of rainfall during this year's Kharif season in Marathwada, sowing operations have not yet commenced in approximately 60 villages within the Latur division. Farmers are facing a severe crisis as agricultural lands in many areas remain completely parched, with not even grass sprouting. The Agriculture Department has also acknowledged the alarming nature of the situation.
Rainfall has been far below average in areas such as Deoni, Ausa, and Chakur in Latur district, as well as in parts of Dharashiv and Parbhani. Some farmers proceeded with sowing in anticipation of rain; however, the crops have begun to wither due to the subsequent lack of precipitation. Consequently, farmers are in a dilemma regarding whether or not to sow crops should the rain arrive late.
With the cost of cultivating soybean crops amounting to approximately ?20,000 to ?22,000 per acre, many farmers are unwilling to undertake the financial risk. Concerns in rural areas are mounting as the scarcity of drinking water and fodder for livestock becomes increasingly critical.
Although the overall average rainfall in Marathwada appears somewhat satisfactory, there are stark disparities across different talukas. While some regions have received good rainfall, conditions resembling a 'dry drought' persist in many villages of the Latur division. The Agriculture Department has urged farmers to make future decisions while taking weather forecasts into account.
