Healthcare services stalled at Sassoon Hospital; resident doctors' strike intensifies, elective surgeries postponed
Pune: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a state-wide strike to protest the state government's decision regarding the registration of BHMS (Homeopathic) doctors holding CCMP qualifications with the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC). Extending their support to this move, the resident doctors' association (MARD) launched a state-wide strike starting Wednesday (August 5).
There are over 1,000 resident doctors affiliated with MARD working in Pune. More than half of them participated in the strike, disrupting Outpatient Department (OPD) services at government hospitals. Sassoon Hospital has a sanctioned strength of 648 resident doctor posts, with 624 currently filled. While 295 resident doctors participated in Wednesday's strike, 329 continued to provide patient care.
The strike had the greatest impact on elective surgeries, with many being postponed. However, emergency and urgent surgeries continued to be performed by the hospital's specialist doctors.
The state unit of MARD staged a sit-in protest outside the Maharashtra Medical Council office in Mumbai. However, due to the lack of any response from the government or the Council, a decision has been made to intensify the agitation starting Thursday (August 6). The doctors have warned that if their demands are not met, they will halt emergency services and OPD operations in addition to elective surgeries. Dr. Yalappa Jadhav, Medical Superintendent of Sassoon Hospital, stated, "The resident doctors' strike has not significantly impacted patient care. Emergency services are running smoothly, as over 329 doctors are on duty. Urgent surgeries are continuing."
Dr. Dheeraj Dhote, President of MARD (Pune), said, "Since discussions with the government have proven futile, the strike will be intensified starting Thursday. We do not intend to cause inconvenience to ordinary patients, but we must continue the agitation for our legitimate demands."
MARD has demanded that the government take an immediate and decisive stand on the matter.
