In this joint declaration, the BRICS leaders have strongly demanded to make two countries of the Global South, India and Brazil, members of the United Nations Security Council to make it more democratic and effective. The leaders of the BRICS countries have reiterated their support for comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including the Security Council, to make it more democratic, representative, effective and efficient.
What was said in the declaration?
The declaration said, "We reiterate our support for comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including its Security Council, to make it more democratic, representative, effective and efficient, and to enhance the representation of developing countries in the Council membership, so that it can adequately respond to current global challenges and support the legitimate aspirations of emerging and developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, including BRICS countries, to play a greater role in international affairs, particularly in the United Nations, including its Security Council. We recognize the legitimate aspirations of African countries, as reflected in the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration."
Condemnation of Pahalgam terror attack
The BRICS group has strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. The BRICS declaration said, "We urge to ensure a policy of 'zero tolerance' against terrorism and reject double standards in combating terrorism." It said, "We emphasize the primary responsibility of countries in combating terrorism and that they should fully comply with their obligations under international law in global efforts to prevent and combat terrorist threats."
Concern was also expressed about unilateral tariffs
The leaders of the BRICS group also expressed serious concern about the increase in unilateral tariffs and non-tariff measures, which was seen as an indirect reference to the US policy on tariffs. BRICS also expressed concern over the ongoing conflicts in many parts of the world and the current state of "polarization and fragmentation" in the international system. It said, "We reiterate our serious concern about the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory."
