India to host 2023 Women's World Boxing Championships,
IBA President Krimlev signs agreement with BFI President Ajay Singh
There will be a prize pool of about 20 crores in the championship
Another great joy has come for Indian boxing as India has been chosen as the host of the 2023 IBA Women's World Boxing Championships.
This information was given during the press conference held in New Delhi on Wednesday. The MoU was signed between International Boxing Association President Umar Krimlev and Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh. Current world champion Nikhat Zareen was also present on the occasion. It is worth noting that IBA President Krimlev has come to India for the first time. Since becoming the President in 2020, Krimlev has been working hard to spread the game around the world.
Krimlev said, “This is my first trip and it has been wonderful so far. India is a very hot country for boxing and holding the World Championships here would be a great opportunity to inspire more women to take up the sport and spread the sport more than ever before. BFI has done a lot to promote boxing in India and I am sure they will host an event that will be remembered forever.”
BFI and IBA will also work together to bring in a historic bout review system. Talking about the overall prize pool, a prize money of about Rs 19.50 crore will be kept. The boxer who wins the gold medal will get around Rs 81 lakh. Boxing has seen a boom in popularity in India in recent years. India continues to finish in the top-5 in global and multi-event competitions like the World Championships, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
BFI President Ajay Singh said, “We are very happy that New Delhi has been made the host of the 2023 World Championship. India has shown its mettle by hosting three major championships in a span of seven years. It is also clear from this that the importance of India in the boxing world is very high. Having such a big tournament in India will inspire women to take up this sport as well. We welcome IBA President Omar Krimlev to India. He has completely changed the game in a very short span of time. Both IBA and BFI have the same goal to take the game to a bigger level.
This will be the third World Championship to be held in India and for the second time in five years it will be held in India. This prestigious championship was started in 2001. India has hosted this championship in 2006 and 2018.
Expressing his happiness, current World Champion Nikhat Zareen said, “I am looking forward to playing in front of the home crowd. It is a matter of great pride to host such a huge tournament and will always inspire millions of young girls. The countdown has started and I am looking forward to defend my title in New Delhi."
In the last edition held in Turkey earlier this year, Zareen had topped the podium. When India last hosted the championship in 2018, Indian women won four gold medals.
