Major accident in Rahul Gandhi’s convoy; five vehicles and an ambulance collide, leaders remain safe

Sultanpur: A major accident occurred on Monday morning involving Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s convoy on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh. Five vehicles and an ambulance within the convoy collided with one another. Fortunately, Rahul Gandhi is completely safe and sustained no injuries. According to preliminary information, the accident took place near the 91-kilometer marker on the expressway. Reports indicate that some Congress party workers, office-bearers, and security personnel sustained injuries. No fatalities have been reported so far. The collision caused significant chaos at the scene. Rahul Gandhi is on a visit to Uttar Pradesh today; he was en route to Sultanpur. Having arrived in Lucknow from Delhi earlier this morning to appear in court, the accident occurred while his convoy was traveling from Lucknow to Sultanpur. Why is Rahul Gandhi visiting Sultanpur? This visit is in connection with a court hearing and proceedings regarding a defamation case dating back about eight years. The case stems from remarks made by Rahul Gandhi during the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections concerning the then-national president of the BJP, Amit Shah. Following these remarks, local BJP leader Vijay Mishra filed a defamation complaint in a Sultanpur court on August 4, 2018. During the election campaign, Rahul Gandhi had stated, “People in India forget that the BJP president is an accused in a murder case… this is the truth.” This criticism referred to the alleged fake encounter case of Sohrabuddin Sheikh. In 2014, a special CBI court in Mumbai had discharged Amit Shah from the charges in that case. Based on these statements, Vijay Mishra filed a criminal defamation case against Rahul Gandhi. In this matter, the special MP-MLA court in Sultanpur issued a summons to Rahul Gandhi in November 2023. He appeared in court on February 20, 2024, and was granted bail. Subsequently, he presented his side in court in July 2024 and February 2026. Rahul Gandhi denied the allegations, asserting that the complaint was motivated by political vendetta. Following the conclusion of final arguments from both sides, the court set October 26, 2026, as the date for the verdict.
