Mumbaikars face chaos during first rains; Harbour Line stalled, local train services slowed
Mumbai, June 24, 2026: Heavy rainfall has been lashing Mumbai for the past 12 hours, disrupting traffic due to waterlogging in low-lying areas. Mumbaikars faced significant inconvenience during this first intense spell of the monsoon.
Trans-Harbour railway services came to a complete halt after the ground beneath the tracks subsided in the Turbhe area. On the Harbour Line, services in both directions were suspended after water accumulated on the 'Up' line at 5:00 AM and the 'Down' line at 5:30 AM. Railway authorities worked on a war footing to restore services, bringing the 'Up' line back to normal at 7:27 AM and the 'Down' line at 7:35 AM; however, speed restrictions have been imposed on both tracks.
Local train speeds have also slowed down on the Central and Western Railway lines due to waterlogging. Water has accumulated on the tracks in the Matunga area on the Western Railway line, causing local trains on both networks to run 15 to 20 minutes behind schedule.
Affected Areas
Dadar, Chembur, Saki Naka, Bhandup, Parel
Kurla, Sion, Vile Parle, Andheri, Tilak Nagar
Commuters heading to work in the morning faced major difficulties due to water accumulation on the roads in these areas.
Weather Department's Red Alert: A 'Red Alert' has been issued for Mumbai and Palghar districts. Heavy rain accompanied by lightning and gusty winds blowing at speeds of 40–60 km/h is expected over the next three hours. Citizens have been urged to exercise caution.
Efforts to drain the water are underway by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and railway authorities. Mumbaikars are requested to remain alert.
