Officials and Ministers Absent; Uproar in Assembly During Farm Loan Waiver Discussion; Proceedings Halted

Mumbai: Major commotion in the Legislative Assembly during the discussion on farm loan waivers.
Mumbai, June 24, 2026: Legislators from both the ruling and opposition parties created a massive uproar in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly after officials from the Cooperation Department and the concerned minister remained absent while the issue of farm loan waivers was being discussed. Consequently, the proceedings of the Assembly were halted for some time.
Panel Chairman Samadhan Avtade had ordered the Secretary and officials of the Cooperation Department to be present in the House. He expressed displeasure at their failure to appear despite the directive. He issued a stern warning, stating that a written explanation would be sought from the officials and necessary action would be taken.
Reacting strongly to the situation, Sudhir Mungantiwar said, "The Cooperation Secretary was asked to be present in the House 45 minutes ago. The distance between Mantralaya and Vidhan Bhavan should not take 45 minutes to cover. One should be able to arrive by car in five minutes. Even if one were to crawl, it should be possible to reach within 30 to 32 minutes. A committee should be appointed to measure this distance."
This incident has raised questions regarding the functioning of the Assembly, with the opposition claiming that the discussion on a crucial issue concerning farmers has been stalled.
