New Delhi, 14 August 2025: The country is busy preparing for its 79th Independence Day. On this occasion, the main function will be organized at the Red Fort in the capital Delhi on August 15, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the tricolor and address the nation. This will be PM Modi's 12th consecutive Independence Day address from the Red Fort, making him the second Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to deliver a speech continuously from this platform.
Sarpanch of 85 villages as special guest
This time Sarpanchs of 85 villages from 26 states and union territories have been invited as special guests in the ceremony. These Sarpanchs will be honored for their remarkable contribution to sanitation, safe drinking water, women empowerment and sustainable governance in rural India. All the selected panchayats have been declared ODF Plus under Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin and Har Ghar Jal Village under Jal Jeevan Mission.
For example, Sarpanchs like Prema Devi, Mukhiya of Motipur Gram Panchayat, Samastipur, Bihar, Kusum Singh, Sarpanch of Rarh Gram Panchayat, Bharatpur, Rajasthan, Shashikant Bhupendrabhai Patel, Sarpanch of Sultanpur, Gujarat and Deepali Uttam Chougule, Sarpanch of Nigve Dumala Gram Panchayat, Kolhapur, Maharashtra have made their villages role models with initiatives like waste-to-energy generation, water management, plastic ban and solid waste segregation.
PM Modi's address: What to expect?
Prime Minister Modi's speech is expected to focus on national security, economic growth and his government's expanded welfare model. Last year, his 98-minute address included the announcement of Uniform Civil Code (UCC), adding 75,000 new medical seats and discussions on social issues like crimes against women, cleanliness, women empowerment. This time too, his address is likely to focus on the progress of the country under the theme 'New India' and the vision of a developed India by 2047.
Unprecedented security arrangements
Tight security arrangements have been made at the Red Fort and surrounding areas. Over 11,000 security personnel and 3,000 traffic policemen have been deployed. Snipers have been deployed on high-rise buildings while surveillance teams are active on rooftops. Anti-drone units, CCTV cameras, face recognition systems, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and, for the first time, under-vehicle surveillance systems (UVSS) are being used. There will be a thorough check of vehicles at five parking lots to detect any suspicious material.
Multiple security layers have been created in coordination with the Delhi Police, the Army and paramilitary forces. Special teams are monitoring railway stations, bus terminals, airports and metro stations round the clock. Patrolling has also been increased at sensitive areas, water purification plants and along the Yamuna. Cyber units' monitoring on social media has also been intensified so that any online threat or rumour can be stopped immediately.
Traffic restrictions and alternative routes
The Delhi Traffic Police has issued traffic restrictions and alternative routes on several major routes from 4 am to 10 am. General vehicular movement will be closed on parts of Lal Quila, Chandni Chowk, Netaji Subhash Marg, Lothian Road, SP Mukherjee Marg and Ring Road. It has been advised to use Outer Ring Road, Aurobindo Marg, Safdarjung Road, Pant Marg, Kamal Ataturk Marg, Mata Rani Jhansi Road, Vikas Marg and Wazirabad Bridge as alternative routes. Entry of commercial vehicles will be banned from 10 pm on August 14.
Weather forecast
The India Meteorological Department has predicted cloudy weather and light rain in Delhi on August 15. The maximum temperature is expected to be between 31 to 33 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is expected to be between 23 to 25 degrees Celsius.
‘New India’ Theme and Campaign
This year’s Independence Day theme is ‘New India’, which reflects India’s progress and vision to become a developed nation by 2047. The Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Ministry of Culture are jointly running the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ and ‘Har Ghar Swachhata’ campaigns to link water, sanitation and health (WaSH) goals with national pride.
