Rahul Gandhi’s London remarks branded Savarkar a ‘mob lyncher’; Satyaki Savarkar makes significant claim in court
Pune: During the cross-examination on Tuesday in the defamation case filed against Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, regarding Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, complainant Satyaki Savarkar made a significant assertion.
Satyaki Savarkar told the court that Rahul Gandhi’s alleged remarks in London created an image of Savarkar as an "extreme hater of Muslims and a mob lyncher."
The hearing for this case is underway before Judge Amol Shriram Shinde of the Special Court for MPs and MLAs (Judicial Magistrate First Class) in Pune. Advocate Milind Pawar conducted the cross-examination of Satyaki Savarkar on behalf of Rahul Gandhi, while Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar is representing the complainant.
Responding to questions from the defense, Satyaki stated that Rahul Gandhi had mentioned an incident where Savarkar and some of his friends allegedly assaulted a Muslim man. However, Satyaki noted in court that Savarkar never harbored hatred towards Muslims; on the contrary, his writings highlighted the paths to their progress.
Satyaki acknowledged that the three videos submitted by the defense included an interview with Gopal Godse. He clarified that while the interview stated Nathuram Godse was a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) volunteer, it also maintained that the Sangh had not advocated for the assassination of Gandhi. Satyaki emphasized that this content originated from Gopal Godse's interview and did not represent a conclusion drawn by the court.
The Kapur Commission was established to investigate three specific matters. The matters included whether anyone other than the accused in the Gandhi assassination case was aware of the plot, whether Chief Minister Balasaheb Kher had provided that information, and what action the government had taken. However, Satyaki also clarified that this commission was not established to investigate Savarkar's involvement in the Gandhi assassination.
He stated that he was a Chitpavan Brahmin but noted in court that he was unaware of Godse's caste.
The next hearing in this case is scheduled for September 3.
