Voter list released after SIR process in Tamil Nadu; More than 97 lakh names removed
Chennai: After the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in the state of Tamil Nadu, the Election Commission has released the final voter list today (February 23, 2026). A large number of names of voters have been excluded in this process, resulting in a significant reduction in the total number of voters in the state. According to the information given by Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik, the names of 97 lakh 37 thousand 831 voters have been removed from the list. After this, the total number of voters in the state has been recorded as 5 crore 43 lakh 76 thousand 756.
Before the start of the SIR process, 6 crore 41 lakh 14 thousand 587 voters were registered in Tamil Nadu. Most of the names excluded are of deceased voters, and many names were also removed due to migration, double registration and incorrect information. Citizens whose names were excluded despite being eligible have the opportunity to re-apply through Form-6.
During this process, notices were issued to 12 lakh 43 thousand 363 voters. Voters whose details were found to be incorrect were directed to submit necessary documents and self-declaration. This entire process has been carried out as per the order of the Supreme Court dated January 30, 2026. As per this order, the reasons for the names being excluded have been made public and the relevant list has been displayed in Gram Panchayat offices, public places, block and sub-divisional offices as well as ward offices in urban areas.
The excluded voters have been given 10 days to raise objections or provide clarifications. The Election Commission has appealed to the citizens to submit their documents in time and keep their names in the voter list. This process took place from October 27, 2025 to February 23, 2026, due to which the voter list has become more accurate and up-to-date.8.
