Chief Minister Fadnavis Warns: Major Risk of Drought This Year!
State Receives Only 88% Rainfall; Drought Crisis Looms Over Vidarbha and Marathwada; Government on High Alert
Mumbai: There is a possibility that the state will receive only 88 percent of its average rainfall this year. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has warned that the rainfall deficit is expected to be particularly severe in Vidarbha, Marathwada, and certain parts of North Maharashtra.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday following a pre-Kharif season review meeting, Fadnavis stated, "Due to the influence of El Niño, the Kharif season faces a significant crisis this year. According to the Meteorological Department's forecast, rainfall is likely to remain at 88 percent of the average. Consequently, the government is on full alert."
Government Preparedness:
Every district has been directed to formulate independent action plans tailored to the specific challenges posed by El Niño.
Anticipating potential dry spells (gaps) in rainfall, the 'Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan' (Water-Abundant Fields Campaign) is being accelerated.
While 20.16 lakh metric tonnes of seeds are required for farmers, 28 lakh metric tonnes have already been made available.
The 'SARTHI' portal has been launched to ensure that all seeds supplied are certified.
An allocation of 48 lakh metric tonnes of fertilizers has been approved; GIS mapping is being implemented at every rail rake point, where divisional officers will also be present to monitor distribution.
Taking complaints regarding 'fertilizer linking' (the practice of mandating the purchase of other products alongside fertilizers) seriously, the licenses of over 400 dealers have been revoked.
Farmer Loan Waiver:
The implementation of the farmer loan waiver scheme will proceed on schedule. The Chief Minister affirmed that the Model Code of Conduct currently in force for the Legislative Council elections will not impact this process. Banks have been issued directives to ensure that farmers can access loans with ease; specifically, orders have been issued prohibiting banks from demanding a CIBIL score as a prerequisite for lending.
Chief Minister Fadnavis has appealed to farmers to utilize drought-resilient crop varieties and to plan their cultivation strategies judiciously, making the most efficient use of available water resources.
