Crowd panic during Dhamma Chakrananda Day and Dussehra celebrations in Nagpur; 5000 police personnel deployed, major changes in traffic

Nagpur, October 2, 2025 (Special Correspondent):Nagpur city is gearing up for two big festivals today, both historically and religiously. As lakhs of followers will gather at Deekshabhoomi on the occasion of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar's Dhamma Diksha Diksha Diksha, strict security arrangements have been deployed across the city. At the same time, rallies and processions will be held on the occasion of Vijayadashami i.e. Dussehra, major changes have been made in the traffic routes. A total of more than five thousand police personnel have been deployed for both these events, and special plans have been made to maintain peace and security in the city. Due to these festivals, Nagpur city has been divided into two forms, 'Dhammanagar' and 'Ramnagar'.
Deekshabhoomi is the place where Dr. Ambedkar took initiation into Buddhism in 1956 along with 5 lakh followers. Lakhs of devotees gather here today on the occasion of Dhammachakra Pravartan Din (also known as Dhammadiksha Diwas), which is celebrated every year on October 14. This year, the festival is being celebrated with more grandeur, and special trains and buses have been arranged from various parts. Keeping in mind the large number of devotees coming from the city, the Police Commissionerate has made elaborate plans. 1500 policemen have been deployed separately in the Deekshabhoomi area. This includes two batches of 100 each from the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), 1000 men and 300 women Home Guards, 750 general policemen and 280 women policemen. Women policemen have been given priority especially for the safety of women. Police Commissioner Dr. Parag Manite said, "This day is not just a religious festival for us, but a symbol of social unity. We are using CCTV cameras, drone surveillance and face recognition technology to ensure the safety of lakhs of devotees. We are vigilant to ensure that no kind of disruption is allowed and the festival is celebrated peacefully." His statement has created confidence in the city residents.
On the other hand, on the occasion of Dussehra, Ravan Dahan and processions are being organized at various places in the city. Especially, a big rally will be held at the ground at Reshimbagh, for which more than 2000 police personnel have been deployed. Due to both these events, major changes have been made in the traffic system. As per the guidelines issued jointly by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the Police Commissionerate, the following guidelines are in place for vehicles going to Deekshabhoomi:
Diverted routeAlternative routeCentral Avenue to Deekshabhoomi closedDiversion via Ajni ChowkWardha Road to Shramik ChowkOne-wayAlternative via Cotton MarketSitabardi to Amravati Road closed (8 am to 8 pm)Diversion via Jhave ChowkRamdas Peth to DeekshabhoomiRestricted via MTEM Road
Due to these changes, citizens have been appealed to use alternative routes in the morning to avoid traffic congestion in the city. "We have deployed 50 special traffic police to prevent accidents due to crowding," said Santosh Kure, head of the traffic department. "We have deployed 50 special traffic police to prevent accidents due to crowding. Additional control has been provided at signals and 20 new parking spaces have been provided. Citizens should check the traffic app for updates."
These celebrations are witnessing a cultural and religious gathering in Nagpur city. Dhammachakra pujan will be held at Deekshabhoomi at 10 am, while lectures by Ambedkarite leaders and Buddhist monks will be held at the main meeting at 2 pm. A peace march will start at 6 pm. On the other hand, Shastra puja and Ramlila will be performed at the Dussehra rally. Both these events have also increased the crowd at hotels, restaurants and shops. The local trade association said that a 30 percent increase in sales is expected on this day.
Last year, more than 3 lakh devotees visited Deekshabhoomi on Dhamma Diksha day, while 1 lakh people participated in the Dussehra rally. This year, the crowd is likely to increase even after following the Corona rules. The Environment Ministry has also launched a 'Green Dussehra' campaign for these festivals, and plastic-free processions and eco-friendly Ravana Dahan are planned.
Both these festivals have spread a wonderful energy in Nagpur city. It is expected that social harmony will increase as the spread of Dr. Ambedkar's seal of approval and the message of Ram's victory come together. However, the Police Commissionerate has appealed to citizens to follow the rules to avoid accidents due to crowding. There is no doubt that this festival will be celebrated peacefully and enthusiastically and will enhance the pride of Nagpur.
