Purnia train accident in Bihar: Dussehra mela joy had to be turned away by sorrow

Purnia, Bihar (October 3, 2025): A heartbreaking incident in Bihar's Purnia district has shaken the entire state. On Friday morning, the Jogbani-Danapur Vande Bharat Express train hit six people who were participating in the Dussehra festival. Four people died instantly, while two were seriously injured in this horrific accident. The accident, which took place on the Katihar-Jogbani railway track in Jabanpur, has raised questions about the local public administration and the railway system. Local leaders and residents say that this incident is not just an accident, but also shows the weakness in the railway safety system.
The accident took place at around 5 am on Friday. The victims, who were returning home after participating in the Dussehra mela, were crossing the tracks. The speeding Vande Bharat Express train suddenly hit them. The speed of the train was so high that four people died on the spot. The remaining two people sustained serious injuries and are undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital in Purnia. According to doctors, although the condition of the injured is critical, all efforts are being made to save their lives.
Local residents rushed to the spot as soon as they heard the news of the accident. They immediately put the injured in vehicles and took them to the hospital and informed the police. Within a few minutes, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and local police reached the spot. The police have taken the bodies into custody and sent them for postmortem. Although the initial investigation has not revealed the exact cause of the accident, suspicion is being raised on the speed of the train and the lack of safety signals when the victims crossed the tracks. Purnia district officials said, "A thorough investigation into the accident is underway. A joint investigation committee has been formed with the railway authorities. Immediate assistance and compensation will be arranged for the families of the victims."
This incident is the second such accident in Bihar for the Vande Bharat Express. Just a week later, on September 30, 2025, the same train had hit a youth at the Hatiagachi railway crossing in Saharsa district, killing him. Even after that accident, special safety measures were announced by the railway system, but now this incident has spread fear among passengers and locals. The Vande Bharat Express is considered the fastest and most modern train in the country, which runs daily on the Jogbani-Danapur route. However, since pedestrian crossing facilities are inadequate on the tracks in rural areas, the possibility of such accidents is always present. Purnia district is an important district in Bihar, and its railway network is connected to the eastern border region. During the Dussehra festival, a large number of people go to gatherings in this area, which increases the crowd on the tracks. Local social activist Rajesh Kumar said, "It is necessary to arrange gates and signal systems at railway crossings. Often, the speed of the train is not reduced without caring about the lives of people. This incident is a warning that modern trains also need modern security." Similarly, Opposition Leader in the Bihar Legislative Assembly Sunil Kumar has also criticized the government, saying, "The Railway Ministry should take immediate action. The families of the victims should be given a compensation of Rs 10 lakh and the culprits should be punished severely," he said.
After the accident, local people protested on the road outside the railway station. They are demanding the construction of an overbridge to cross the tracks. The district administration has appealed for peace, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav have also taken note of the incident. The Prime Minister's Office expressed condolences on Twitter (now X), saying, "The heart is touched by this tragic incident. The victims will get justice."
Railway safety is a national issue, and hundreds of people die in such accidents every year across the country. In 2024 alone, there were more than 150 rail accidents in Bihar, in which more than 200 people died. According to experts, measures such as train speed control, gates at crossings and public awareness are necessary. Special rules need to be implemented for fast trains like Vande Bharat Express so that such incidents do not happen in future.
The accident has dampened the spirit of Dussehra festival and has left the families of the victims in mourning. The local administration has announced financial assistance to the families and the entire country is waiting for justice while awaiting the inquiry report. This incident is not an isolated incident but highlights the need for reforms in the railway system.
